Cee’s Oddball Challenge: Hopscotch New Zealand Style

Hopscotch New Zealand Style-7923

Good morning from a warmer and windy Hastings day.  We are expecting the wind to pick up and the heavens to open.  The storm that hit Sydney has now moved to New Zealand so we are expecting a rough day.  A shame really as today is a public holiday.  For the first time we have Mondayised ANZAC day.  This means that if ANZAC day should fall on a Saturday or Sunday then the following Monday is a public holiday.

Anyway, while walking around Hastings  I walked past a school and noticed this hopscotch painted on the ground.  What appealed to me is the Koru motiv around it.  Giving it a distinct New Zealand flavour.

The koru (Māori for “loop”[1]) is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond and symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace.[2] It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattoos. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.[citation needed]

Koru is the integral central motif of symbolic, seemingly-abstract kowhaiwhai designs, traditionally used to decorate Maori wharenui(meeting houses). There are numerous semi-formal designs, representing different features of the natural world.[3]

This is my entry for Cee’s challenge at Cee’s Photography –

Odd Ball Photos are those great photos that you take which really don’t seem to fit into a common category.  We’ve all taken them and like them, because we just can’t hit delete and get rid of them.  There is never a theme to this challenge, so what is an odd ball is all up to discover and photograph.  I hope that you have a lot of fun!
