Travel Theme: Modern

Going down (1 of 1)

Good morning from a cool Hastings day.  No frost this morning.  That is a relief.  Tomorrow is the official start to our winter.  It is also a public holiday.  Even though the Queen of England’s birthday is actually in April, for some reason we celebrate it on the first weekend in June.  Hopefully it is a nice day and I can get out with the camera.

This week Ailsa from Where’s my backpack? has asked for our modern photos.  A lot of my photos are of older subjects, or florals.  So they could be modern.  Most of the buildings in Hastings are in the Art Deco style so are not modern.  The photo I have chosen is old, but the staircase with the escalator has a modern feel to it.  This is actually a photo of a photo that I took in Vienna over 20 years ago.  A friend and I travelled to Vienna to see an exhibition by Annie Lebovitz.  Now that was brilliant.  Her photos are amazing.

WPC: On the way to Art Deco

Art Deco Steam Train-0358

Good morning from a very cold and frost Hastings.  I am sure that this week has just got colder and whiter each day.

So for this week Michelle from The Daily Post has asked us for our photos on the way to anything.

So I went to my warmest photos of the Art Deco Weekend last February.  I stopped on the way to Napier to catch the steam train on the way to Otane, which is south of Hastings.

Cee’s Black & White Challenge: Take a New Photo

Leafy tree trunk-042

Good morning from another very cold and frosty Hastings day.  The birds are very vocal and the sun is just starting to rise, while the grass is very white again.  At least we will have a nice day with it.  I am heading to Cornwall Park this morning with my social snappers group.  We are going to focus on birds and ducks.  In other words moving objects.  We do have a lot of fun taking photos, which is what it is all about.

Anyway this morning Cee from Cee’s Photography has asked us for photos that we have taken within the past couple of weeks.  This photo was taken just after the sun had actually risen and the rays had highlighted the leaves of this ivy that is climbing this tree.

Friday’s FLorals: Vriesea

Vriesea-067

Vriesea is a genus of the botanical family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae. The genus name is for Willem Hendrik de Vriese, Dutch botanist, physician (1806–1862).[2] Its species are widespread over Mexico, Central America, South America and the West Indies.[1]

Containing some of the largest bromeliad species, these tropical plants harbor a wide variety of insect fauna, unlike the smaller Catopsis species. In the wild, frogs may go through their whole life cycle in a bromeliad. This genus is closely related to Guzmania. Both Guzmania and Vriesea have dry capsules that split open to release parachute like seeds similar to the Dandelion (Taraxacum sp.). Most Vriesea are epiphytes and grow soil-less on trees. they have no roots but have special hold fasts that do not take in any nutrients. All nutrients are taken in through the center “tank” made by a rosette of leaves.

I am not sure if I have posted these photos but I love the colours of these unusual plants.

Here is some more information about this brightly coloured flower:

One Word Photo Challenge: Frosty Grass

Frosty Days-010

This week Jennifer at Jennifer Nichole Wells has asked us for our cold photos.  Well that is what we are here in Hastings at the moment.  Snow on Monday and heavy frosts every day.  No wonder I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning.  Brrrr.

I have tried to get some photos of the frost close up, from inside of course.  Using maximum zoom.  Warmer that way.  So here are some of my frosty  photos.

A Serendipitous Story: A New Perspective of Art Deco

Art Deco Lights-004

Good morning from a cold Hastings day.  I am so late this morning as I just couldn’t get out of my warm, cosy bed.  It has been very cold this week and today I didn’t need to get up for anything so why should I?

Anyway this week Cee from Cee’s Photography has asked us for our photos showing different perspectives.

A couple of weeks ago I was really lucky with the weather.  When I got up on this Friday it was raining hard.  I had a plan for our social snappers group.  I wanted to walk around Hastings and take different photos of the Art Deco features.  I wanted to demonstrate the different  perspectives that we can take of the buildings, and in particular our street lights.  Needless to say I wasn’t happy.  I did have a backup plan of photo editing etc indoors, but we want to get out and take photos.

As I was eating my breakfast I noticed that the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to shine.

By the time I got into the Women’s Centre at around 9.15 AM the sky had completely cleared.

And as you can see, the sky was totally cloudless for the whole time we were wandering around town.

But in the afternoon the weather closed in again and started raining hard again.

Such a serendipitous day, which is also part of Marilyn’s challenge at SERENDIPITY.
