Travel Theme: Miniature Roses

Minature Roses-376

Good afternoon from a warm and sunny Hastings day.

Please excuse my tardiness.  I have just changed Internet Providers and they spent the morning tweaking our internet.  I suppose they thought that no-one would be awake before midday in this household, and therefore are not online.  Well they got that wrong.  So I have just done some editing and then sat in the sun to paint.  Now it is a case of watching paint dry.  But the internet is now back on and a tad faster – methinks.  My son is just over the interruption and now couldn’t care less about the speeds – which he normally does.

Anyway onto Ailsa’s challenge over at Where’s my backpack?, which this week is tiny things.

So here are some miniature roses taken on Friday at the Frimley Rose Gardens.

Minature Rose-388

These are not true macros.  But the roses were about the size of an old New Zealand 50 cent piece – about 3 cm or just over an inch and a bit in diameter.

Minature Rose-386

I just used the macro setting on my camera, just to enable me to focus right up close and then braved the thorns to get right up close to them.

Poppy-630

But for this bee, I stood well back and zoomed on it.  The bees were just a little too active for my liking last Friday.

WPC: Muses in Nature

European Goldfinch-316

Good morning from a warmer, sunnier Hastings day.

This week  from The Daily Post has asked us what inspires us.  What do we take a lot of photos of.

My muse is nature.  Yesterday I took a group of lovely ladies to Frimley Park to enjoy the sunshine and to find the last of the summer roses.  We had a fabulous time wandering around and taking photos.  I find it so hard to tear myself away from it all.  There is always that last photo you just can’t not take.  Sounds weird but I am sure everyone knows what I mean. First up I found this European Goldfinch hiding among the roses.

Rose-071

There were still a lot of late roses.

Rose-145

Mostly yellow and pink roses.

Rose-335

But even before we left the Heretaunga Women’s Centre I couldn’t resist taking some photos of the poppies in the frost.

Poppy-033

And then after we had finished I had to take some more photos of the poppies in the sun.

And there were a lot of bees so I had to take photos of them too.

The other ladies haven’t done much in the way of taking photos – I took over 700 in all – I shocked them I think.

Cee’s Fun Fotos: Three’s Company

Three-9354

Good morning from another cold and frosty Hastings day.  Hopefully things will warm up.  The whole country is cold – with snow around as well.  So it is nice to see some summery photos from the northern hemisphere bloggers.

So for Cee’s challenge over at Cee’s Photography is for showcasing the number three – so I delved into my archive to find some of my florals – what else.

Three-149

Three poppies

Three-039

Three pansies.

Three-075

Sorry Cee, I know you are not keen on bees,  but I found these three bees on this poppy.

Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge: Bees

Macro Blooms-2752

Good morning from a slightly warmer – i.e. not so frosty Hastings day.

This week for Sally’s challenge I have gone back to the Art Deco from last year.  My battery died on my camera so I ended up using my cell phone.   My iPhone 5S was new at the time and so I wanted to see how the zoom worked on it.  Just because I didn’t want an unwelcome sting.  I was pleased with the results.

This is part of Sally’s Mobile Device challenge which this week is macros.

Five Photos, Five Stories: A Bee’s Story

A Busy Bee-517

I’m just minding my business.  Actually my life is my business.  I am a busy bee.  My job is to fly from plant to plant and pollinate everything I touch.  At this time of the year the nectar just seems to be so yummy and irresistible.  There is so much to put into the hive to feed our queen.

At least here in this park there are no pesticides.  Now that is hard to spot.  I have seen so many of my friends pass away from this – Tom, Dick and Harry were especially close to me.

Why can’t these big clumsy humans realise that we are the most vital creatures on this earth.  Without us there will be no grasses, no crops, no food.  We pollinate the blossoms that grow into their fruit and foods that they eat.

Those big clumsy humans think they are the most intelligent creatures on this earth.  But us humble bees will have the last say.  When we are not around, they won’t be around either.

So my plea to you big oaf with the strange looking object in your face, is to pass on this message to your fellow humans.  So that Tom, Dick and Harry and others don’t die in vain.

Thankzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

This is for two challenges.  The first one is for Marilyn’s new challenge at  SERENDIPITY where we get to write a story with our photos.

I was also nominated by Emilio at  Photos by Emilio and as part of this challenge I would like nominate Carol from Light Words.  All you need to do Carol is write a story to go with your photo and then nominate another blogger each day.  Your photos are so great.  No obligation.

SERENDIPITOUS PHOTO STORY PROMPT – I SHOULD STOP TRYING

A Serendipitous Story:

Autumn Poppies-231

Marilyn at SERENDIPITY has started a new challenge. One of adding some form of words to our photos:

I like telling stories linked to pictures. To help the process along, Tuesdays and Thursdays, I’ll publish a picture and write something about it. Some days, it may be long, others day, just a couple of sentences. You can use this picture — or one of your own — as the prompt. Link it back to this post (pingback) so other people can find it.

You will have to forgive me if I miss a day here and there, or if Thursday is comes out on Friday.

Feel free to jump in.

WHAT DO I MEAN BY “STORY” AND “PICTURES”?

Story. Words. Poetry, prose, fact, or fiction. A couple of lines, a fanciful tale.

Pictures. Video if that’s your thing. Scanned pictures from your scrap-book. Weird pictures from the internet. Cartoons. Pictures of your family vacation and how the bear stole your food. Any picture you ever took and would like to talk about

WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT?

Your trip to Paris. You flight from Irkutsk. You favorite dog, cat, ferret, cockatoo. The weird boyfriend you had in high school. The last book you read, the next book you plan to read, why you don’t read books (but you write them)(don’t write them)(would like to write them).

Television shows, movie stars, classic film, history, language. Fiction, non-fiction. Everything, anything as long as you include a picture and some text.

No, I didn’t write all this, I just cut and pasted it from her post explaining all this today.

When I first started this blog I found it hard to write too much.  And now, with my Monochrome of the Day I don’t add any words.  I let the images and the image title do the talking.

But I usually write about what I was thinking or doing when I take my photos.  And so it is today.

After taking my group of 3 lovely women for my Social Snappers group I headed towards Frimley Park.  The weather was weird.  Some drops of rain alternating with sunshine.  I knew that the poppies would be starting to really pop. And sure enough some were out, along with the bees.  When I see bees, I think, oh oh.  I am allergic to bees.  But thank goodness for zooms.  It means standing back in relative safety and zooming in and focusing on what I came to do.  Take photos.

Actually it is getting rather late for the year for poppies.  There were some very worn looking blooms.  They open up and die within a day or so.  Sad really.  I think that the council had wanted to have some around for ANZAC day.  But we have also had some rather cold nights last week which didn’t help.  Normally we don’t have frosts until well into May.  I think Mother Nature decided that she would prove that global warming was just a myth.

Well, Marilyn.  How is that for my first attempt?

P.S.  If you think that there is something odd about the exposures of my photos, please let me know.  This computer’s screen has a very poor quality resolution.  So I am not really too sure about whether something is too vibrant or not.  If you have any sort of advice, please write and tell me.  This is great as I can now use Photoshop without it crashing but then there is this downside.

Cheers.

Cee’s Fun Foto challenge: Chorus

Dogs that bite

This week Cee has gone for the chorus of this song, My favourite things.  I have really loved this series.  It really has been a lot of fun searching for the photos to go with it.

When the dog bites, When the bee stings, When I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, And then I don’t feel so bad.

So the first photo – actually I don’t think that Abbey would bite.

But this bee would certainly sting.

Bees that sting

I would say that my favourite thing is to take these photos when I am feeling sad.
