Sally D’s Mobile Challenge: A Friendly Fantail

Friday 19th June-8732

Good morning from a very cold and frosty Hastings day.  Last night was the coldest night ever all over New Zealand.  And I am late this morning as I have been trying to get my fire going.  It is freezing.

Last Friday I went out with my social snappers group to Frimley Park.  As we were walking around my battery died on my camera.  So I got out my iPhone 5S as this friendly fantail flitted around us.  We were talking loudly but that didn’t scare this little bird off.  I drained the cellphone getting photos.

I will catch up with everyone later.  I have my painting class today. So here is what I have been doing the past few weeks.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: This land is my land, Hastings, New Zealand

082 (640x487)

This is such a fun challenge by Cee for this series.

This week it is two verses from the song This Land is My Land:

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.
I’ve roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps,
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

I remember singing this at school, but we changed it to suit New Zealand.  So here are some photos around where I live – taken last autumn.

First up is the orchards – Hastings is known as the fruit bowl of New Zealand.

At once stage our economy was based on lamb and wool.  Now it is dairy but the sheep are still used to keep the grass low around the orchards in autumn.

Pakowhai Park Fantail (640x487)

One of our native birds, the Fantail.

Pakowhai Park - flaxes (485x640)

Our native flax plants.

Pakowhai Park. (485x640)

Pakowhai Park and our native bush.

Michelle’s Weekly Pet Challenge: Feathered friends

DSCF8696_Fotor_20141231 (640x477)

Good morning from a bright and sunny New Year’s Eve here in Hastings,

Yesterday was a weird day.  I have found a place to live which is the right price in rent that I could afford.  It is nothing flash but there will only be my son and I, it is a sunny house but no garden.  That was okay.  But then in the evening I found out that the rent is likely to go up as the landlord only dropped the rent for Christmas.  So it is at the lower rent for 3 months and then it will go up.

Just before I left to go and look at this house ex-hubby turned up in violation of his trespass notice.  I didn’t see him but my son did and told him to leave as he was violating the trespass order.  All he wanted was to go out for a cup of coffee and catch up with our news.  As if that was going to happen.  Then later in the day he drops of a letter for me with a small handwritten note on it basically giving the police evidence that he has been to visit.  So I am in two minds – should I go to the police and he is in deep trouble and really ruin any chance of our divorce ending amicably or just let it slide and move without giving him our address and get on with the divorce negotiations.

The last straw was finding out that my disability support will drop drastically now that my son turns 18.  He now has to apply for a student allowance in order for us to even be able to eat.

So all in all a great way to end this year.  So my motto is onwards and upwards for next year.

Anyway onto this challenge by Michelle.  We have a lot of bird life around this house and this blackbird is always in the front lawn so I grabbed a few photos.

Then one day I was walking past the back door and looked over to find this fantail flitting around the car and just managed to grab the camera and catch a few rather grainy photos of it.

Birdlife at Pakowhai Park

Fantail

Good evening from a cool Saturday night in Hastings.

After a cold start the weather turned out rather warm and so to get a bit of photo therapy I headed out to find some autumn colours which I will show tomorrow.

I also found some bird life while I was out.  There were lots of fantails flying around enjoying the warm sunshine.  The only thing was that there were dogs running around so that just as I was focusing on the fantails a dog would start barking and the bird would fly off.  This was the best shot.

Then there were the usual sparrows.

stilt 1I found these stilts walking not far from the motorway. I really struggled with the zoom with these, trying to get the right depth of field.  These were the best of my photos and I had to heavily crop them as well.

Feather

Finally a feather to finish of this post.
