Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Seagulls and Sand

SeagullOctober 24, 2015-October 24, 2015

Good morning from another hot muggy day here in Hastings.

So what better photos to use than some beach scenes to cool us off.  Cee Neuner has asked us for some of our photos starting with the letter S for her black & white challenge last week.

So here are some seagulls in flight.

And some sand too.

Phoneography Challenge: All creatures great and small.

Good morning from a cool Hastings day.

For this week’s challenge for Sally’s challenge at Lens and Pens by Sally it is the challengers choice.  So I have gone for both small as in this insect to birds in the sky at Port Ahuriri

This was the most successful of my attempts to take photos of seagulls in flight.

Then there is Abbey and…

Socks (1 of 1)

Everyone will have to wait for any photos of me going horse riding.  We just worked with ponies yesterday and learnt how to care for them.  I did take a couple of photos but was limited as only one person gave their permission to take their photos.  It was fun and the weather was great for us.  Thank goodness.

One Word Photo Challenge: Chocolate

chocolate bird (640x497)

This week Jennifer has given us a yummy colour to showcase.  I can go for months without eating chocolate and then will binge for about a week or so and then stop again.  Mostly because I can’t afford it.  Very convenient way to control the chocolate intake.

Anyway here are my photos for this challenge.

Painted in Waterlogue

I can’t seem to get away from birds this week.  This last photo I chose for the chocolate coloured leaves, the sparrow is an added bonus.

Steve’s Snap & Zap Challenge: Birds

This is a fun challenge from Steve

Snap & Zap: The Seagulls…

  1. Create a new post showing the original
  2. What edits have you made?
  3. What software/techniques have you used?
  4. Link back to the current week’s page

So the top image is my original looking up at a seagull on a tarpaulin.

First I edited it with Snapseed with the drama filter and HDR

IMG_0441 (640x453)

Then I headed over to Distressed FX and sorry I can’t remember what filter I used there.IMG_0442 (640x453)

Just for a bit of colour.

Then I played around with Photoscape.

Backlit (640x473)

First I added a backlit filter.

watercolour pencil (640x473)

Then added a watercolour pencil filter. Too light and not enough definition.

pen (640x473)

So then I added a pen filter.  Still not enough for my liking.

backlit 2 (640x473)

So some more backlit filters.

So let me know which is your favourite version.

Actually it is has been a bird theme week for me.  And just to prove that birds are around me, yesterday we had a visit from a mother duck and her 10 babies.  A long way from Cornwall Park.  Unfortunately we were too busy trying to catch them instead of taking photos.  It took about a couple of hours.  We caught about 7 of the ducklings but the mother duck kept flying around getting distressed and the other 3 ducklings kept going around in circles in the shrubbery.  In the end the ducklings we had caught were put in an empty rabbit hutch and the neighbour came back a couple of hours later to find the mother duck by the hutch with her 3 lost babies.  So they were all then caught and taken back to the park, which I might add is a couple of kilometers away.  😀

Just to show Steve I was thinking of his theme last week which was walking.  – the final edited version of my photo last week.

A Word a Week: Fly

Flying 4 (640x477)

Good morning from another lovely Hastings spring morning.  Yesterday was so warm, it was the first time I have worn short sleeves and a skirt.  Normally I am a pants and sweater person.  So it was so warm that I was able to change.  It is so nice not to have so many layers on.  Sorry for those in the northern hemisphere.

This week Sue’s theme is fly.  So I have chosen these seagulls flying in for some food.

Flying 5 (640x477)

Flying 2 (640x477)

Flying 1 (640x477)

Flying 3 (640x477)

These were taken at Ahiriri, Napier.

Thanks for visiting. I will catch up with everyone tonight.

Travel Theme: Bountiful

Good morning from a cold, frosty Hastings morning.  At least it is calm after yesterday’s nasty storm with heavy winds and rains.  Now we have a frost.  Spring is taking a back step.  Hopefully today and the next week she will be back.

So onto this week’s Travel Theme.  I noticed going through my reader that there were a couple of posts featuring birds.  So, of course, here are my birds.  I took these photos the same day as my sparrow photo from Wednesday’s pet post.  This time I decided to do some black and white.  I haven’t really done much lately owing to a lack of my mac.  Then last night I played around with these photos on my iPad and I found that I could do a lot with black and white editing.  I can’t adjust the tones much as I just have to use the filters that I have – so these are edited in Snapseed, Photoshop and Distressed FX for an Ansel feel to them.

Here is Ailsa’s post to check out this challenge:

The Daily Post: On Top

Good morning from a calm, quiet Hastings.  The winds have died down.  It has been a hard 48 hours for New Zealand with a lot of flooding and other damage.

This weeks challenge by The Daily Post is ‘On Top’.

These photos were taken a couple of months ago when I took my mother to the beach, to give her something different to look at as she was starting to miss my father terribly.  It was a nice day and I took a lot of photos.  I used my photography as an excuse to go out.

These three shots show the gulls on top of  the awning above our heads.

Here is the same bird walking on top of the awning above our heads.

Actually these photos remind me of the Carpenters song – On Top of the World.

Here are some other great posts to check out.

The Daily Post: Three, two one gulls at play

Good morning from another hot Hastings.  We are expecting over 30 degrees this afternoon which will be hard on those participating in the vintage car show for the Art Deco festival.  I will be going over with hubby to see it and of course take photos. I know it would be hard for those in the northern hemisphere that are suffering a terrible winter.  So I hope these photos will warm you up.

Time for the weekly challenge by The Daily Post.

When I was over in Napier yesterday I found these seagulls enjoying the  cool water.  It was very hot and they just seemed to have a great time dipping in and cooling themselves down.

Thanks for visiting and here are some other great blogs to look at as well.

Ese’s Weekly Shoot & Quote Challenge: Continuous

Good morning from a drier sunnier Hastings morning.

I have been enjoying this challenge by Ese’ s Voice where we find quotes to go with our photos.  It makes me think a little about what my photos are about as well.  Anyway this weeks challenge is     Ese’s Weekly Shoot&Quote Challenge – Continuous      .  I first searched the internet for quotes before searching my archives for photos to suit it.

My quote this week is:-

You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.

Alan Watts.

My photos were taken a few months ago in Napier.  The beach here is just pebbles and rather wild.

Untitled 2Untitled1

They have been edited with the cartoon filter with the GIMP editing programme.  I found it made the images look a bit sharper and adding some drama to them.

Thanks for visiting and take care.
